Storage Field Day 8 – Here I come! #SFD8

It is a great honor that I get to announce today! The awesome crew at Tech Field Day have invited me back for another round! A special thanks to Stephen @SFoskett for the consideration once again, and “delegate wrangler” Claire for making sure everything runs smoothly.

It is an amazing experience being able to sit with great minds of the storage industry, listening to and talking about the future of the storage market.

Netapp: The reports of my death are greatly exaggerated

Now, we have all seen the blog posts, the Register article, the StorageMojo article, the anti-NetApp’ers on Twitter. Calling NetApp a one-trick pony or that they have not innovated or they are almost dead.

When you look at NetApp’s Data Fabric vision, the NaySayers couldn’t be more wrong!

Convert Netapp body.7z to old style ASUP for ConfigAdvisor offline

I made a little script last year to help me with a customer issue, and I had forgotten about it until I ran into the same problem.

The script converts the extracted TXT and XML files from the autosupport mail body.7z into the old format for use with Config Advisor.

An idea for File Integrity Monitoring a powered off View Gold Template

Today I had an interesting question posed to me by a customer.

“What’s a way we can verify file integrity compliance of our VMware View gold image, at regular intervals, WITHOUT powering it on? Because powering it on would force us to recompose all VMs once it’s powered down again”

In order to verity file integrity of a VM, there will need to be a file integrity check at some point in time. [PCI DSS 11.5] This is not a point in doubt. The question arose regarding regular scheduled checks on file integrity, at a pre-set interval. That’s the key. They need to ensure it weekly or monthly.

A look at Netapp’s NDMP Cloud Extension Software (NCE)

Hey, you got a small Netapp? Hey, ya wanna do some backups to Amazon S3 or a compatible object storage system (aka Netapp StorageGrid Webscale)? NCE is for you!

The official blurb on it:

NDMP Cloud Extension Software (NCE) is a host-based utility that transfers data between Data ONTAP® storage systems and the Amazon® Simple Storage Service (Amazon S3) cloud. You can transfer data to Amazon S3 by using the ndmpcopy command. The ndmpcopy command is executed from a Linux host, which communicates with the storage system to transfer data to Amazon S3. Data transfer is supported at the volume, qtree, directory, or file level.

Netapp 7m Exports to cDot Export Policy convert script

A coworker asked me is I could whip up a script to convert hundreds of lines large 7-mode /etc/exports files into Clustered Mode Export Policies and client rules.

No problem. Nothing is too hard for some ugly bash scripting.
