My @NetappInsightUS 2014 Tentative Schedule & Tips!

I’ll have an action packed week coming up in October at Netapp Insight @NetappInsightUS, followed up a trip to Sunnyvale for the Storage Field Day 6 #SFD6 where I will be a delegate.

Quick Powershell: Creating cDot vServer templates in my lab.

I needed to create ALOT of vservers in my lab based off of engineer phone extensions.

Engineers have 3 digit extensions, 123 for example. All engineers have extensions between 192-254 so this works as a lazy mans tool.

Quick Tip: Tuning many VMhosts for All Flash Arrays!

I needed a simple way to push some base tuning configurations to a large number of hosts in my lab.

Make this into a script called tune.sh. Update the naa.999 with the numbers your AFA SAN makes inside your vmware. (naa360 and others are common).

NetApp Cluster Mode TMP Volume type? Huh?

Late last night I was working on a very large CIFS and NFS migration for a customer. This was the culmination of a dual site FAS2050 7mode to FAS3220 cDot upgrade path.

I had originally planned on using the 7mTT (7-mode Transition Tool) to automate this migration. I went through the 7mTT install, core setup, and even planned a few volumes to be migrated by it.

Mid project, I decided against the 7mTT to do it manually. Though, many TMP type volumes were left around.

NDMPCOPY on NetApp 8.2.x Cluster Mode

So, I have a customer who I need to move 3 “boot from iscsi san” luns from a Netapp OnTap 8.2 Cluster Mode vServer shared with regular iscsi luns, to their own dedicated vserver. How do you easily move between vservers? NDMPCOPY!

Quick n Dirty Netapp LUN creation script

I am constantly having to pre-create or migrate massive amounts of LUNs in customer environments. I have many ways to go about it, powershell, ruby, but my awk script is my #1 way to do it

Imagine having to make luns for dozens of database instances on multiple hosts for dev/prod/qa. Suckage!

They all would follow a certain order and naming convention. Most of the sizes would be the same.

If I have to do anything once, I’ll probably have to do it again. So, script it! This will work in any shell with awk (osx/linux/solaris/CygWin)

pkgrm EMCpower kills Solaris

EMC to NetApp Solaris FCP migration – Recovery When EMC Breaks the box

So, I have been working on an EMC to Netapp migration project, and the customer is entirely Solaris 10 on their Oracle DB environment. (They want to change, sadly they cannot at this time.)

Dealing with migrations between vendors can be difficult. In EMC’s world, we have POWERPATH, which is a pile of suck when you have to work with SAN vendors on the same box who want to rightly use MPXIO (Native multipathing). I hate 3rd party addins for things like Multipathing. This is 2014, the crap is built in!

Well, what happens when you switch a box from POWERPATH to Native multipathing with MPXIO? All the power path stuff goes mad and it can’t find any of it. That is for another blog power, not this one.

What about when the migration is done, and you want to remove POWERPATH from the server? Well it’ll kernel panic the box, it’ll corrupt the boot archive, and you will be in a reboot loop. Dead in the water, thanks to EMC.

This post isn’t just about migrating to NetApp, it’ll help anyone who tried to uninstall PowerPath on solaris, and got corrupted system files from it, and how to rebuild the BOOT ARCHIVE.

NetApp Cluster Mode – Active Directory Authentication setup

Cluster mode is an awesome beast. I say beast, because everything takes MANY more steps to do. Say you want to just enable SSH or OnCommand System Manager client access to your base level cluster? Not so fast… there’s lots of steps before that.

In order to add active directory authentication to a Cluster Mode environment, you have to do the following:

  1. License CIFS
  2. Make a CIFS vserver
  3. Add an Authentication “DOMAIN-TUNNEL”
  4. Add User entries for every domain user + application + role
  5. Profit!

Here I will walk you through what it takes to create do all the crap I listed above.

Attack of Old Bugs – Netapp high CPU

100% CPU

Just an FYI when you jump from 7.3.x to 8.1.4 you can have a re-occurrence of the Netapp bug 568758 which had to do with block deletes killing performance and spiking CPU due to serialization of volume cleanup processes.
